JSHS invites high school students to report on the results of their original research investigations in STEM and compete for scholarships and recognition at university-held regional symposia. Students in grades 9-12 enrolled in public, private, or home schools are eligible to participate in their local Regional Symposium. See Rules of Competition for eligibility details. There is no cost to register for or participate in a regional JSHS event. If you are asked to pay a fee to register, please contact us at [email protected].

Any student who starts a research project and intends to submit their research at the regional JSHS competition is able to sign up for virtual mentoring through the Chronus platform. The mentor resource is available year-round to support you throughout the JSHS competition season and the non-competition time of completing research or improving continued projects. Join Chronus as a mentee here.

The Virtual Region is for students who have geographic or financial barriers to participating in their home regions and for students who do not live in a JSHS region. Therefore, the National JSHS office is in charge of pre-screening the application to prevent students from using this route to avoid participating in a highly competitive region or applying because they have missed the registration deadline for their home region or were not invited to present at their home region.

Please note that you can only register for one region, which means you will be automatically disqualified to register at your geographic (home) region after submitting an application to the Virtual Region. Additionally, as you can only register for one region, you will also be automatically disqualified to register at the Virtual Region after submitting an application to your home region. JSHS participants must be U.S. citizens or Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs).

Symposium dates: February 28-29, 2024

Deadline for student applications: February 14, 2024
