Teachers: JSHS Meets 21st Century Skills Standards

JSHS meets the curriculum standards that you implement in your classrooms everyday. Our program assessments show that JSHS is successful in developing 21st Century learning skills such as:

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Information Management
  • Effective Use of Technology
  • Career and Life Skills

Through independent STEM research projects, your students already deepen their understanding of STEM content. The JSHS competition process from application to presentation helps them to use this content knowledge in new ways and explore real-world problems. Along the way, they will broaden their personal and professional networks by meeting and learning from other students as well as JSHS staff and volunteers from academia, industry, and government.

Resources for Teachers and Mentors

The connection between STEM projects and 21st Century skills is outlined well by the University of Maine’s Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence white paper. You can find more resources on our Teachers and Mentors page.
